I’m happy and sad at the same time that our sessions of Pre-Cana are over! We started the evening quickly, with a reading of “the wedding prayer” instead of reciting one together. We discussed this prayer (which is really more of a poem - I mean, it was written by John Shea after all) and it’s meanings - that there are times when things will be hard, when things will be good or bad, when there is happiness or sadness - but marriage is there for a lifetime of love and communication. We went back to finances a little with a fun worksheet on specific items and how much it was important to you - “Couldn’t live without,” “Somewhat important,” “If I won the lottery,” or “Not interested.” I was really happy to see basically Kris and I had the same answers. We also had the same answers for the worksheet we did next on time management - where you divide 168 hours in a week up into different activities. I thought it was great that we had the exact same number of hours devoted to sleeping!
We also both had “extra time” - not really, but we both are able to multi-task so we don’t really feel like we don’t have enough time. An important point that was brought up was how much that will change when children come into the picture - definitely interesting to think about. We then covered goal-setting, and how those goals affect you individually, as a couple, help your career, or any combination thereof. We also had to rank them by level of importance, and I think this was a highly valuable exercise because it is something we will come back to time and time again. Our final topic of the evening was “Echoes of Love” which Kris and I had actually done beforehand because we thought it was homework - oops. Anyway, that was really cool because we got to talk about how we met and how we felt then, how our love has grown and affected others, and how we hope to affect others or be affected by others in the future. We ended the evening with a celebration with cake and presents - and then we were presented with our certificates of completion of the course. It was a bittersweet moment for me - we’d grown to know these very kind other couples over the past month or so, and now we probably won’t ever see them again. And yet we will remember them whenever we go back to talk about all the topics we’ve covered in this course. It was really good to get those things out in the air and discussed before getting married, and I HIGHLY recommend some type of course like this for anyone I know that’s engaged or about to get married.
Kris and I spent basically the entire weekend picking out songs for our DJ to play during our wedding reception. We came up with a preliminary list of lots of songs we loved, picking some out for the “introduction” music, the “father-daughter dance,” and the “cake cutting.” The next day we looked at the list and realized that we had 5 1/2 hours of music - WAY too much for a 5-hour reception - an hour of which is the cocktail hour, and another hour of which is basically sitting down and eating. It was really difficult, but we were able to cut down the list to 3 1/2 hours of “must-play” songs, which includes all those “special” songs. So now we have songs picked out for the “bouquet” dance (I am not going to reveal what that is until the reception, sorry!
), the “mother-son” dance, and our “last dance” song too. It was a lot of fun going through all our music and discovering songs we didn’t realize we had (mostly courtesy of my friend Ray!), and very surprising to see really how few songs compose THREE HOURS worth of music. I’m really happy we’re done with it though - because it was due today!

The reason Brian and Vanessa came for a visit this weekend was this shower, and I’m so happy they came because we all had a really great time! The shower was a lot of fun too!
My friends Amanda and Renee hosted a very fun tea-party themed shower, complete with finger sandwiches (so yummy), scones, and individual teapots! The party also had a “time” theme - where each guest was asked to bring a gift that would be used at a certain time of day, with the example of movie tickets for 7pm. I got lots of lovely gifts, and I want to say thank you again to everyone who was able to come.
We played a couple games - the first of which was a word scramble. Vanessa won by being the first person to unscramble all the “tea” related words - even though she unscrambled “china” as “chain” on her first try. At least it was a word that kinda made sense - because I did the same thing except with “silver” which I unscrambled as “livers.”
We also played “gift bingo” where everyone had to write down gifts they thought I would receive. No one actually won that game, so we all shared the prizes Renee had picked out, which were these really nice candles that smelled like different kinds of fruity drinks (I got raspberry cosmopolitan). We had a lot of laughs - as I got to see all my aqua fitness friends (aqua princesses!) with “all their clothes on” - and we all shared fun games we’ve played at other shower-type parties. I really liked the time/tea party theme, so much so that I might use it myself in the future!
